![]() ![]() Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope (IVP Academic) comes to the subject of Black experience from a different angle. ![]() Lindsay has held up a mirror to help us understand the Black experience in the context of the wider UK church and the work that we need to do in order to be more inclusive of the diversity that is God given in the church. Many will have read Ben Lindsay’s We Need to Talk About Race (SPCK). Like many people, I have tried to read more widely around the subject of racism since the death of George Floyd. Martyn Taylor writes: I first came across Esau McCaulley when I discovered his New York Times article on ‘ What the Bible Has to Say about Black Anger?’ I loved the way he handled scripture and moved his readers from the Psalms of rage (Ps 137) to the wider message of biblical hope where the oppressor also finds freedom and hope through the God revealed in the scriptures (Isaiah 49). ![]()

Later, when I took a college history class about the Reformation, I encountered a cantankerous and alarmingly elderly professor. His enthusiasm and wit made the subject come to life for the first time, and not just be a collection of names and dates. One of my high school history teachers got so into tales of medieval mayhem that he’d dart back and forth between two blackboards, desperately scrambling to find space to scrawl out more information as he told us about the black death. I always preferred taking a history class with an instructor who had a lot of personality. Wading through the options to find a good one was always excruciating to me. Most of them are bone dry and deadly dull, in my experience. You see, I enjoy history, but I have a hard time getting into nonfiction books. ![]() Man, I really wish I had crossed this one off of my to-read list sooner. “Being part of history is rarely a good idea.” ![]() ![]() The purpose of this is to appease the gods for another fruitful year. ![]() The villages send a woman from their population to be burned alive in an arena full of cheering spectators. This book is graphic and violent it may not be for everyone, especially right now.Įvery year, the Empire sacrifices women from the cities and villages under their command. Also, please keep the content warnings above in mind. I also want to warn that I’m going to spoil some elements of this book because some things are integral in discussing my feelings. While the world building is fantastic, the pacing greatly affected my reading experience. ![]() Phoenix Unbound is a brand new fantasy romance from Grace Draven and the start to a new series. CW/TW for mentions of violence, rape, and abuse both in the book and in this review. ![]() |
